I'm going on holiday in Cuba a few days and I wondered how the country had been hit and Sandals hotel (Royal Hicacos) been damaged in any way?

Most likely not, as Beardo said. My suggestion is to contact the resort directly to be sure of anything. However, the effects of hurricanes in the stations have already been worked.

Varadero has not been particularly affected by the hurricane, and all hotels are operating normally, as far as I know.
