True leaders are mentors with a servant's heart. These are not enough words to fill space. If you are not a true servant with a true passion for helping people you will not be a true leader in the true sense of the word. It's that simple. Terry and Erin are two girls aged 11 years who started a nonprofit organization called "Friends Helping Friends." The organization raises awareness and money to fight against childhood cancer. They are a true representation of leadership in its purest form. I understand that we do not usually think of leadership in jeans and pink tennis shoes, but it may be part of the problem. We often expect to see the direction in a "format" and we miss all the magic leaders who have the potential to change the world. We walk right by those who are most likely to soar above all others because we have a narrow predetermined what "should" be.
The girls decided to take the reality of their lives, learn from it and focus on others so they can make a difference for the generation that will go after them. Before they were ten years they had already put their legacy in motion. Three of the four children who are involved in the program of terminal cancer. Their dream of living and what they and their families thought it might have been broken by the harsh and cruel facts of reality. They could choose to lose in this reality and losing their dreams, and yet they find empowerment in the journey. Exactly! These girls have inspired a foundation called "Friends Helping Friends" (www.fhfproject.com). They are dedicated to raising awareness of childhood cancer, to raise dollars for her research and the identification of children in their County who are experiencing it so they can teach them to drive in jeans and pink tennis shoes too!
